Welcome to New Heights OCD & Anxiety!

Specializing in the Treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

OCD is a debilitating condition which impacts the life of many Canadians. Unfortunately, there are very few counsellors/psychologists who truly understand the complexity of this condition, and how to provide effective treatment. New Heights is proud to be Vancouver’s only mental health clinic specializing in the treatment of OCD

At New Heights, we acknowledge the heterogeneous nature of this condition and strongly believe it warrants its own specialty. Quite often, OCD is recognized and treated as any other anxiety disorder resulting in treatment that is non-effective, and, at times, counter-productive. Although OCD is an anxiety-based disorder the treatment protocols are unique and highly specialized.

At New Heights, we have had the privilege of working with numerous clients and their families struggling with OCD. Through this, and through years of training, our specialty has emerged. We acknowledge the degree to which this condition is highly under-serviced and under- recognized amongst mental health professionals and the public mental health system. We are proud to call ourselves Vancouver’s OCD Specialists.

We treat all OCD subtypes

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is most widely associated with handwashing and order/symmetry and the word OCD is often used as an adjective. While contamination and order/symmetry are common presentations, there are many unique variations of this condition. OCD is insidious in that it often attaches itself to those things that are most valued by an individual. It can cause a person to question their own values, motives and intent .

If you’re suffering from this condition, you’ll be looking for the type of treatment that addresses your specific symptoms. You may be reluctant to describe your symptoms to a professional for fear of being judged, misunderstood or mislabelled. In some cases, your obsessions may even lead you to worry about criminal consequences, or in some cases child custody issues. Choosing a professional who can properly recognize, diagnose and treat this condition is extremely important.

Each subtype requires a unique understanding and approach, although the overarching treatment principles are the same. We treat all Types: violent/harm obsessions; sexual/taboo obsessions; sexual orientation OCD (SOCD); pedophilia OCD (POCD); postpartum OCD; compulsive checking (including ‘hit and run’ OCD, fire & safety); responsibility OCD; relationship OCD (ROCD); religiosity/scrupulosity; order & symmetry; existential OCD; sensorimotor OCD and more. We also treat many of the unique miscellaneous types that are not mentioned on this list.

Treatment Approaches

Initially, all of our clients receive a free phone consultation which helps us determine whether we are a good fit for you. This gives you an opportunity to ask questions and to seek clarification about our services prior to meeting in person, or virtually. Our initial session consists of a comprehensive evaluation to determine OCD type (s) and other mental health conditions that may impact the course of treatment. We also offer family sessions and home visits when indicated.

Our approach relies heavily on Exposure & Ritual Prevention (ERP) which is the gold standard for the treatment of OCD. ERP, which is a type of Cognitive Behavior Therapy. This approach, when administered correctly, can be highly effective in helping a person manage symptoms. Together, you and your therapist will work together to create an effective ERP Program. Your therapist will be there to guide you through your exposures and to offer you the support and encouragement that you need. In conjunction with ERP, we also draw upon approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and other components of CBT.

Group Therapy

New Heights offers OCD group therapy which is a highly effective and cost effective treatment modality.

What About
Virtual Sessions?

COVID-19 has indeed changed the landscape for OCD Therapy. In some cases, as it turns out, online OCD sessions can have some distinct advantages. Often, for OCD sufferers, the triggers occur within a person’s home and as such the sessions can take place within this context.
